Technology comes last in community building

I found a link to the POST method on Jeremiah's blog this morning and it really hit home with how we are working with clients at Small World Labs.

The POST methodology basically says to look at everything else before you look at technology. Although our core business is around selling our 'technology' what really has to happen first is mapping out the overall strategy for the community. Who is going to use the site (clients, employees, etc) and how will they gain value from it. Setting goals for success and then determining how that will be measured as the community grows.

This is a great way to start thinking about your community strategy and making sure the value you offer people matches what your company is looking to gain from engaging in social networking.
